Attitude Determines Altitude

written by Cindie Trieber

I am certain that you have heard the statement, Attitude Determines Altitude, several times; and perhaps you have it on a wall quote in your home or office. Defensive, grumpy, critical, envious, impatient, martyr, selfish, controlling and sarcastic—although the list could go on and on, these are a few of the many different kinds of attitudes we can possess.
When I started Bible college, (way back in the dark ages) at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, I was introduced to the word ‘attitude’ in a different way. Starting Bible college as a freshman can be a frightening experience. Not only have you moved away from home, which for most students is quite a distance, you are also meeting new people and being orientated to a LONG list of rules. On one such morning, I was complaining to one of my newfound friends about the long list of rules. She stopped me and said, “Cindie, you have a BA.” Wow! I had only been in Bible college for a couple of days and I had already earned a BA? I had no idea you could earn one so quickly! She then proceeded to tell me that it stood for “bad attitude.” Webster defines attitude as feeling or emotion toward a fact or state—a negative or hostile state of mind. I had to confess that I had both!
This past week I actually found myself with a bad attitude more than once. I chuckled to myself thinking, “How like the devil this is!” I am to write an article for Francie Taylor and she has asked me to write on the subject of attitude. Thanks, Francie!
We came home from a very busy, exhausting few days of helping move my in-laws into a senior assisted care facility. Packing and sorting through ninety years of living is no small task! We arrived home late Wednesday evening and I was tired. Early the next morning my husband announced to me that we were getting a new roof and that they were starting today!
We have a couple of contractors in our church who were given a roof from a very expensive house. They knew we needed a new one and were being very kind and gracious. We had a very old roof with several leaks. However, it already had two layers of roofing on it. In order to put the new roof on, they had to get both layers off by scraping, throwing shingles, more scraping and more throwing shingles! This was before they could even start the pounding, pounding and more pounding of the new roof.
Roof
When we moved into our current home, my husband worked VERY hard to make it nice. We especially enjoy the backyard. He wanted it to be an “oasis” for us. We put in a rather large above ground pool, dug it down a couple of feet in order to make it half above ground and half in ground. We had recently purchased a heater for the pool, and I had been able to enjoy that twice before we headed down to Santa Maria to help his parents. I cannot tell you how much I was looking forward to the next couple of days to just “chill” in my backyard.
I was now a prisoner inside and if I wanted to go outside, I had to leave my house. There were several roofers on top of my house and I was not about to be in the backyard, let alone in the pool!
If you know anything about construction, you know it takes far longer than they tell you and it costs far more than you plan. This lesson we had learned very well from several remodel jobs on former places of residence. I was in the midst of construction, my least favorite thing in the entire world, and I hated it. I grumbled, complained, griped, and last but not least, pouted about my present circumstances. Poor me! I was really enjoying my own pity party. I thought out loud several times, “I have worked so hard the last couple of days and I just want to relax. Heaven knows the summer is coming to an end and life in the “fast lane” is about to start up again.”
It was in that moment of complaining that I caught myself. “Cindie Trieber, you have a BA!” Here I was getting a free roof, people to do the roofing for very low cost, no more leaks during the rainy days of winter and I WAS COMPLAINING! I bowed my head and asked God to forgive me, asked the Holy Spirit to fill me and started praising the Lord for His goodness in providing something that Bro. Trieber and I desperately needed for our house. This does not make me a good Christian or better than anyone reading this article, but it illustrates that we can, with the help of the Lord, control our attitudes.
Life throws us a curve ball every now and again and it’s not only a bowl of cherries, but oftentimes, life is the pits! Things happen that are difficult, especially for we as women. We go through emotional changes, physical changes, and financial difficulties (I mean, who wouldn’t enjoy a little more money in the bank account?); but, it is during those times we must rely upon the promises of God and the Holy Spirit to help us keep the right attitude.
Winston Churchill said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”
Harry S. Truman said, “The pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.”
God’s Word says in Psalm 139:16 “Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.” Translation for me—He saw me before I was born, every day of my life is recorded in His book and every moment is laid out before a single day has passed.
Check your attitude. You might have good reasons for having a “BA” but we must learn to conquer our attitude every day for the rest of our lives. You can do this. I trust that you will.
God bless you,
Cindie Trieber

Repeal, Don’t Reform the IMF!

Ron Paul, M.D.

A responsible financial institution would not extend a new loan of between 17 and 40 billion dollars to a borrower already struggling to pay back an existing multi-billion dollar loan. Yet that is just what the International Monetary Fund (IMF) did last month when it extended a new loan to the government of Ukraine. This new loan may not make much economic sense, but propping up the existing Ukrainian government serves the foreign policy agenda of the US government.

Since the IMF receives most of its funding from the United States, it is hardly surprising that it would tailor its actions to advance the US government’s foreign policy goals. The IMF also has a history of using the funds provided to it by the American taxpayer to prop up dictatorial regimes and support unsound economic policies.

Some may claim the IMF does promote free markets by requiring that countries receiving IMF loans implement some positive economic reforms, such as reducing government spending. However, other conditions imposed by the IMF, such as that the country receiving the loan deflate its currency and implement an industrial policy promoting exports, do not seem designed to promote a true free market, much less improve the people’s living standards by giving them greater economic opportunities.

The problem with the IMF cannot be fixed by changing the conditions attached to IMF loans. The fundamental problem with the IMF is that it is funded by resources taken forcibly from the private sector. By taking resources out of private hands and giving them to IMF bureaucrats, government distorts the marketplace, harming both American taxpayers and the citizens of the countries receiving the IMF loans. The idea that the IMF is somehow better able to allocate capital than are private investors is just as flawed as every other form of central planning. The IMF must be repealed, not reformed.

The IMF is not the only US institution that manipulates the global economy. Over the past several years, a mysterious buyer, identified only as “Belgium,” so named because the buyer acts through a Belgian-domiciled account, has become the third-largest holder of Treasury securities. Belgium's large purchases always occur at opportune times for the US government, such as when a foreign country sells a large amount of Treasuries. “Belgium” also made large purchases in the months just after the Fed launched the quantitative easing program. While there is no evidence this buyer is working directly with the US government, the timing of these purchases does raise suspicions.

It is not out of the realm of possibility that the Federal Reserve is involved in these purchases. The limited audit of the Federal Reserve’s actions during the financial crisis that was authorized by the Dodd-Frank Act revealed that the Fed actively intervenes in global markets.

What other deals with foreign governments is the Fed making? Is the Fed, like the IMF, working to bail out Greece and other EU countries? Is the Fed working secretly to aid US foreign policy as it did in the early 1980s, when it financed loans to then-US ally Saddam Hussein? The lack of transparency about the Fed’s dealings with overseas central banks and foreign governments is one more reason why Congress needs to pass the audit the fed bill.

By taking money from American taxpayers to support economically weak and oftentimes corrupt governments, the IMF distorts the market, enriches corrupt governments, and harms both the American taxpayer and the residents of the counties receiving IMF "aid." It is past time to end the IMF along with all instruments of American interventionist foreign policy.

The FBI Releases Final Report of the 9/11 Review Commission

Washington, D.C.March 25, 2015
  • FBI National Press Office(202) 324-3691
Today, the FBI released The FBI: Protecting the Homeland in the 21st Century, the final report of the 9/11 Review Commission. This congressionally mandated review focused on the FBI’s implementation of the recommendations proposed by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (the 9/11 Commission).
“I am pleased the Review Commission recognized the significant progress we have made to build a threat-based, intelligence-driven law enforcement and national security organization,” said FBI Director James B. Comey. “I thank the commissioners and their staff for their efforts to help us better serve and protect the American public.”
The FBI asked three experts to lead this review: Edwin “Ed” Meese III, former United States attorney general; Timothy J. Roemer, former congressman and ambassador; and Bruce Hoffman, Georgetown University professor and noted author on terrorism. Over the past 14 months, the Commission visited numerous FBI offices, here and abroad, and—with the full cooperation of the FBI—received more than 60 briefings from FBI personnel in the course of their work.

Wizards Attack the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Lance Earl, Power County Idaho

This week, the Idaho House of Representatives finally passed a long overdue bill. They finally got around to passing what should have become law the moment I moved to Idaho. That they waited in inexcusable, unacceptable... but at least they finally screwed their hats on tight enough to know, and their courage snug enough to face the truth. This bill states that I am among the elite, among the noble, one of the the upper crust. I clarifies my status, heads and shoulders above all of you "average people", all of you from the peon side of the tracks. It validates that I may walk among as one of the truly exalted while you must come to terms with your own lowliness and your meaningless pitiful lives. I will now set aside the above nonsense because it is just that, nonsense. However, as ridiculous as it is, it is also completely true. In Idaho, I can carry a concealed weapon virtually anywhere I want. I can do so without a concealed weapons permit and why? Because I am an elected official in Power County. In fact, all of your state and county officials are in that same class of legislated royalty, and who put them there? Well they did of course! You may recall that I opposed the Idaho Enhanced Carry permit when it was first introduced by Rep. Judy Boyle. You may recall that I reached out to the entire state legislature with my concerns and with suggested solutions. You may recall that I contacted the sponsor of that bill and my local representatives multiple times through email, phone calls and personal visits. You may also recall that none responded to my concerns, that is until just last week when Rep. Ken Andrus called to tell me that there was nothing he could do. While I appreciate the call, I reject the message. So, lets take a look a just one aspect of this permit system that creates illegal monopolies, elevates some to a higher class of citizen, rips off defensive gun owners while risking the lives and the safety of all, and crushes the second amendment. The original bill allowed state and county officials to carry concealed weapons without a permit. In truth, elected officials have enjoyed this special privilege for a very long time. Unconstitutional wizards, under the dome in Boise, set out to rewrite the bill and make it fair to all. HB 243 proposed to remove the special privileges for elected officials, thereby making it a requirement for all to get a permit. I, and hundreds of second amendment proponents, argued that HB 243 was a step in the wrong direction, a step away from the Constitution instead of a move toward it. Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, backed by Rep. Heather Scott, offered up the Constitutional solution with HB 89, which simply granted permitless concealed carry privileges to all the law abiding citizens of Idaho. Because of extreme opposition to HB 243, the wizards did a quick rewrite and reintroduced it as HB 301. The only substantive change was to restore the special privileges for state and county officials. HB 301 passed the house with an overwhelming 57 to 11 vote. This new bill is the same old pig with different lipstick. So, who are these wizards of which I speak? House State Affairs Chairman Tom Loertscher, at the insistence of House Speaker Scott Bedke, held HB 89 in committee. This means that it never advanced to the floor where we could make our voices heard and where legislators could weigh the bill on its own merits. Loertscher and Bedke have both stated that HB 89 is dead. Rep. Rick Youngblood sponsored HB 243 and voted for HB 301. All the while, he strongly opposed Constitutional Carry for all. Rep. Judy Boyle, who was the force behind the original Enhanced Carry bill, continued to push for more nonsense. There is one more wizard that may surprise you. After HB 301 passed the House, I received an email from the NRA, in which they slapped themselves on the back and said, "HB 301 does not seek to present an alternative to 'constitutional carry,' which has been declared 'dead' by legislative leadership... While the NRA supports the right of law-abiding individuals to possess concealed weapons without first having to obtain a government-issued permit, this legislation does not seek to achieve that goal." The flowery letter from the NRA does not match NRA actions. Dakota Moore is an NRA lobbyist who provided strong support for the above wizards. He is an avid backer of our Enhanced Carry permit system and is strongly opposed to Constitutional Carry. Recently I spoke with him and specifically asked why the NRA was not supporting Constitutional Carry in Idaho. He stated that he was not comfortable with some of the language in HB 89. When asked to indicate the portions of the bill that he found objectionable so that they can be addressed. He refused. This weak answer was also the position of the other wizards. Perhaps there was a bit of collusion here. They say, follow the money if you want to shine light on the murky doings of wizards. Most Enhanced Permits are issued after a person takes an NRA course by an NRA instructor. The NRA gets paid every time this happens. And there you have... illumination.

65th Anniversary of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives Program

Washington, D.C.
March 11, 2015
  • FBI National Press Office
    (202) 324-3691
The FBI this Month announced the FBI’s commemoration of its famous Ten Most Wanted Fugitives program, created 65 years ago.
In 1949, a reporter for the International News Service (the predecessor to United Press International) approached the FBI and asked about writing a story about the “toughest guys” being sought by the FBI at the time. The Bureau provided the names and descriptions of 10 fugitives to the reporter. The resulting feature became a major story and garnered national attention. In response to the overwhelming public interest, on March 14, 1950, then Director J. Edgar Hoover inaugurated the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives program.
Since then, the FBI, through the Top Ten list, has been asking for help from the public to locate its most dangerous fugitives. The response has been impressive. Since 1950, 504 fugitives have appeared on the list; 473 have been apprehended or located, with 156 of those fugitives located as a direct result of citizen cooperation.
As the nature of crime and FBI priorities have evolved over the years, the makeup of the Top Ten list has also changed. While the list began by featuring bank robbers and murder suspects fleeing state jurisdiction, it has evolved into a tool to search for major organized crime figures, cyber criminals, child predators, and white-collar criminals. The list also reflects the international scope of crime which emphasizes the importance of strong global partnerships in the search for violent criminals who know no boundaries and pose a significant danger to all.
Just as the composition of the list of Top Ten fugitives has changed over the years, the ways in which the FBI communicates with the public have also been revolutionized by technological advancements. While the publication of fugitive information via newspapers and magazines initially brought broader participation to the program, the FBI now uses the Internet, television, social media, and digital billboards as it continues to seek the public’s assistance in locating wanted fugitives.
The FBI places a high priority on the fugitive investigations represented on the list. At a minimum, a reward of up to $100,000 is offered by the FBI for information leading directly to the arrest of a Top Ten fugitive. In some instances, the reward amount offered exceeds $100,000.
That reporter’s idea, so many years ago, to form a partnership among law enforcement, the media, and the citizens of the world, continues to prove beneficial today. As the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives program celebrates 65 years of success, the expectation is that it will continue to empower citizens across the country and around the world to safely and effectively assist law enforcement for years to come.
More information about the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives program, including the current list of fugitives, is available on the FBI’s website at www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten.

After a Twelve Year Mistake in Iraq, We Must Just March Home

Written by Ron Paul, M.D.

Twelve years ago last week, the US launched its invasion of Iraq, an act the late General William Odom predicted would turn out to be “the greatest strategic disaster in US history.” Before the attack I was accused of exaggerating the potential costs of the war when I warned that it could end up costing as much as $100 billion. One trillion dollars later, with not one but two “mission accomplished” moments, we are still not done intervening in Iraq. President Obama last year ordered the US military back into Iraq for the third time. It seems the Iraq “surge” and the Sunni “Awakening,” for which General David Petraeus had been given much credit, were not as successful as was claimed at the time. From the sectarian violence unleashed by the US invasion of Iraq emerged al-Qaeda and then its more radical spin-off, ISIS. So Obama sent the US military back. We recently gained even more evidence (https://news.vice.com/article/the-cia-just-declassified the-document-that-supposedly-justified-the-iraq-invasion) that the initial war was sold on lies and fabrications. The CIA finally declassified much of its 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, which was the chief document used by the Bush Administration to justify the US attack. According to the Estimate, the US Intelligence Community concluded that: '[W]e are unable to determine whether [biological weapons] agent research has resumed...' And: 'the information we have on Iraqi nuclear personnel does not appear consistent with a coherent effort to reconstitute a nuclear weapons program.' But even as the US Intelligence Community had reached this conclusion, President Bush told the American people that Iraq, "possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons" and "the evidence indicates that Iraq is reconstituting its nuclear weapons program." Likewise, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s “bulletproof” evidence that Saddam Hussein had ties with al-Qaeda was contradicted by the National Intelligence Estimate, which concluded that there was no operational tie between Hussein’s government and al-Qaeda. Even National Security Advisor Condolezza Rice’s famous statement that the aluminum tubes that Iraq was purchasing "are only really suited for nuclear weapons programs, centrifuge programs," and "we don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud," was based on evidence she must have known at the time was false. According to the NIE, the Energy Department had already concluded that the tubes were "consistent with applications to rocket motors" and "this is the more likely end use." It is hard to believe that in a society supposedly governed by the rule of law, US leaders can escape any penalty for using blatantly false information – that they had to know at the time was false – to launch a pre-emptive attack on a country that posed no threat to the United States. The fact that they got away with it simply makes it all the easier for Washington’s interventionists to try the same tricks again. They already did with Libya and Syria. It is likely they are also doing the same with claims of a Russian “invasion” of Ukraine. Last week President Obama correctly blamed the current chaos in Iraq on the Bush Administration’s decision to invade. He said, “… ISIL is a direct outgrowth of al Qaeda in Iraq that grew out of our invasion. Which is an example of unintended consequences. Which is why we should generally aim before we shoot.” However, if the US intervention in Iraq created the “unintended consequences” of ISIS and alQaeda, how is it that more US intervention can solve the problem? A war based on lies cannot be fixed by launching another war. We must just march home. And stay home.

RAISING WELL-BALANCED CHILDREN

written by

The New Year is off to a great start here at North Valley and in the Trieber home. What a fun and special time the holidays were! Time with family, friends and our staff made the holidays very special.
Two “extra special” gifts that pastor and I received on Christmas Day were the announcements that we are adding two more grandbabies to the family in 2014! Tim and Rebecca are expecting baby number three; Ryan and Tiffany are expecting baby number five—eleven grandchildren to call us Nana and Papa! Does it get any better than that?
Boys are way out in front with seven (God’s perfect number), and girls are way behind with just two. The two granddaughters we have are so special. If we end up with just the two of them, it is perfectly fine, and what papa wouldn’t like to rack up the number of boys to nine? To watch your children marry and serve the Lord is incredible, but the grandchildren “put the icing on the cake!” We look forward to these two additions to the family.Balanced-Children-Photo-include
It is also our privilege to teach The Home class at GSBC this semester. Pastor and I enjoy “tag team” teaching as we cover a lot of material on marriage and child rearing. While we experience growth in our family this year, it’s also a joy to experience the growth that we see in these students as we instruct and encourage them to have marriages and homes that bring honor and glory to God.
Of all the joys in life, parenting is certainly at the top of the list. It’s more than changing diapers, 2AM feedings, naptimes, toys, spit up and Mr. Rogers. It’s about taking the little life given to you by God and raising it, shaping and molding it, and watching it develop into what God would have that child to be. There is more to parenting than schedules, meals, school, homework, sports, emotional issues, spats with sibling’s, hurt feelings on the playground, book reports, drivers’ permits, drivers’ licenses, banquets, graduation, and college. It is about directing that little life to God; after all, He created this life in the first place. It takes a mom and dad with unconditional love for one another and an unconditional, unselfish love for the child. It is an awesome and sometimes tiring responsibility, but the rewards are so worthwhile.
A lesson entitled “Raising Well-Balanced Children” is listed below.
  1. Be Normal.
    (Do not develop nutty ideas)
    • Children cannot attend Sunday school.
    • Children can only stay with parents.
While giving instruction and discipline and teaching character and responsibility is vitally important, don’t forget to let children have fun once in a while! Mrs. Marlene Evans said, “If it’s not wrong, wicked, or against the Bible, leave it alone.
  2. Establish limited rules.
    • Our Lord gave us 10 commandments. Don’t constantly create new rules.
  3. Raise your children from a heart of love.
    • Don’t rule with an iron fist, but from a heart full of love (Titus 2:2-4).
    • Provoke not your children to wrath (Ephesians 6:4). In other words, do not discourage them.
  4. Expect Obedience.
(Children need to learn to obey the first time every time)
    • Do not beg for it.
    • Do not whine for it.
    • Do no negotiate for it (establish right away who is in charge).
  5. Be responsible to teach.
    • Ephesians 6:4 says we are to nurture and discipline our children in the admonition of the Lord. This is training by actions.
    • Teach consequences (there are consequences for doing wrong).
    • Help them read character in others.
  6. Be a happy camper.
    • Children must NOT be reared in tension.
    • Stay calm.
    • Be a Spirit-filled parent.
  7. Let your children see Christ in you.
    • Dad—what they see in you will be their view of the heavenly Father.
  8. Listen more than you lecture.
  9. Help your child find his or her future.
    • When they are small, do not worry about them wanting to be a “professional baseball player.” They will jump from one profession to the other.
    • When they are older, guide them into conversation about their future (don’t give answers, ask questions).
  10.  Set a good example.
    • Do as I do—not as I say.
    • “Who you are speaks so loudly, I can’t hear what you’re saying.”
We have our children in our homes for such a short time. It is a season. Enjoy it to the fullest.
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
(Joshua 1:8)
